Today’s Reading

Ezra 7-8; Luke 20

Key Verse(s)

“ . . . the chief priests and the scribes . . . sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people . . . So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor. Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test Me?”

Luke 20:19-23 (NKJV)

I thought this passage was interesting this morning. Of course I’ve read it many times, but I don’t recall ever having this thought.

No doubt the religious establishment of the day wanted very much to quiet this new up-start. They did not like how he implicated them in all that was bad in their practice of Judaism. They were prepared to use any means necessary to squash the assault against their establishment. This of course means that they would use whatever legal means that were available to them to quiet Him.

But we see that Jesus was onto them. He had enough insight and understanding of the situation that he posed a question he knew they would not want to answer.

I believe it’s not hard to see that in our culture, given the notion that Christianity is actually bad for the nation, these kinds of attacks upon believers is our new reality. We see that with the discrimination lawsuit‘s that have been brought against bakeries and other small businesses. I feel that we as believers need to be just as wise and understanding of the times we live in as Jesus was. This will help us navigate to potential traps that are set by those who just don’t like that we are believers.

Note: There is so much more that I could say about this, but this really isn’t the purpose of my daily reading highlights.

Father I pray that You would help me to be wise. Help me to see the ulterior motive‘s of those who wish to do me harm simply because I choose to follow You. Help my brothers and sisters to be wise in this as well.

Also Father, I pray that you would help us to live in such away that people would see our good works and glorify You. Help us to truly love people and not be a voice of condemnation to them. You came to save the world not to condemn it. Help us to share all the goodness that you have shown to us through Your son Jesus Christ.
